“Golub refuses to produce a wound on the body of the victim, an identification with the violence of the perpetrator at the level of the painted somatic mark. In this sense the work is actually anti-Goyaesque in its refusal to turn the victimized body of political violence into a spectacle of despair. It is wrong to assume that these works collude with the violence of the perpetrators. They enact a form of empathetic vision, not disembodied pity.”
