Deciduous Leaves Turn. is a walking, writing, speaking, installation, and performance project— informed by the time we are living in, visual and auditory observations of community, and neighborhood development. Through poetry, performance, and printed publications, the project questions ideas of public and private space, social presentation, personal responsibility, and everyday patterns of decision making. The installation is composed of 9 newspapers and a poetry booklet. Viewers are invited to enter the gallery space and walk through the landscape of print ephemera, as well as, attend a participatory walk and performance.
Reading / Walking / Sitting-In is a participatory walk and performance. We will begin at the gallery near the BQE and Industry City— and follow a curated route through Sunset Park, Brooklyn to an area near Green-Wood Cemetery, where Schmidt will perform a reading of her poetry and we will sit-in on the sidewalk.
January and February 2021, Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, NY
The photographs included in the newspapers are analog snapshots taken by the artist while walking the same route each day over the course of a month. They were scanned and printed in the order taken without being digitally altered.
The poetry booklet features a poem written by the artist title “Deciduous Leaves Turn.” It includes observations, conversations, and news mentions from the time and location.
