The imagery of “Leave of Grass Manuscript 2017, COPY 2020” is the printer’s notes for a letterpress print of ”Leaves of Grass”, a poem written by Jennifer Schmidt.

The poem, itself, was letterpress printed on 52 sheets of loose leaf paper in an edition of 6. The letterpress printed 52 page poem is printed on archival Mohawk Superfine paper that is housed in a non-archival cardboard box, allowing the edges of the printed poem on paper to yellow and change with time. The poem is to be displayed with “Berkeley Weeds: The way the sun falls around a helpless thing,” double sided prints featuring found plant imagery from Berkeley, CA. Both the poem “Leaves of Grass” and “Berkeley Weeds: The way the sun falls around a helpless thing” were made in Berkeley, CA during the summer of 2017, the 50th anniversary of the social phenomenon the “Summer of Love” and the inaugural year of Donald Trump’s presidency.

“Leaves of Grass Manuscript 2017, COPY 2020” commemorates the beginning and end of the Trump presidency and a re-instatement and examination of the poet Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself.”
