Abluminal is an adjective that has references in anatomy, botany, medicine and physics.  Varying from a description of an anatomical cavity to a relationship to brightness of light, the workd, Abluminal, served as the centerpoint for this exhibition.  The show presents Ellsworth Kelly’s detailed yet spare study of a philodendron, Barbara Broughel’s study not just of bubbles but of their depiction and use in the northern European tradition of still-life painting, Martin Puryear’s piece which is both a two dimensional rendering of a sculptural and hollow work with tubular openings as well as a stand-alone work that exists as a tour de force in etching and Sarah Sze’s Ripe Fruit Falling that is a sculpture and work with paper, architecture and gesture, linear, planar and sculptural.  Each work describes and can be described in vastly different vocabularies and the hope is that this tension is continued in the juxtaposition of the works, not just within each piece.
