Barbara Krakow Gallery announces our fourth exhibition of the work of Boston-based artist, Sally B. Moore.  In this exhibition, Reroute/Reroot, Moore presents seven new works using materials as varied as bamboo, brick, glass, graphite, paperclay, papier-mâché, plexiglas, rope, rubber, tassel, thorn, thread, twine, wire and wood. The works rest on the floor, hang from the walls and dangle from the ceiling. Every option in creation is available and it is the specificity of Moore’s vision that looks, chooses, adds, subtracts and, ultimately, balances.

Several works utilize wire and deconstructed grids to explore visual and physical patterns of control and release. In these pieces, the subject matter springs from the alteration of the common materials used – most specifically gridded wire that has been contorted, cut, twisted and reconfigured. Several other works, with less identifiable materials, use sculpted elements that are overtly figurative to demonstrate the similarities between the actions of holding and releasing.   As one can see, figuration and abstraction commingle in Moore’s work. This mixing creates fantastical scenarios that a viewer can identify with, examine and explore on both a physical and poetic level.

Key to Moore’s work is the creative presentation of gravity, through tension and balance, not only as structural (counterbalance, cantilevering, etc.), but also as metaphorical aspects. Moore reminds us that “sometimes there is humor in urgency, beauty in bleakness, and a compelling attraction to contradiction.”
