Michael Mazur: New Work

Inspired by a 13th century Chinese scroll painting by artist Chao Meng-fu, The Mind Landscape of Hsieh Yu-yü (now in the Art Museum of Princeton University), Mazur has created paintings which originate in looking at nature and landscape painting.  But this form of looking and painting that Mazur is practiccing is far from the Albertian perspective of a commanding power over the world around us.  Rather, Mazur’s paintings are an expression of a poetic and subjective space, an inward looking landscape of the mind.  Both his large and small scale works seem to encompass more than their physical dimensions, recalling to memory a passage by Henri Focillon:

A work of art is situated in space.  But it will not do to say it simply exists in space:  a work of art treats space according to its own needs, defines space and even creates such space as may be necessary to it.
